what is functional medicine?

Functional medicine is a personalized approach to medicine that better addresses the needs of people in the 21st century, it is truly the future of medicine. The goal of functional medicine is to get to the root cause of chronic illness, not just treat the symptoms.

why do we need functional medicine?

Functional medicine addresses the underlying causes of disease, using a systems-oriented approach and engaging both patient and practitioner in a therapeutic partnership. It is an evolution in the practice of medicine that better addresses the healthcare needs of the 21st century. By shifting the traditional disease-centered focus of medical practice to a more patient-centered approach, functional medicine addresses the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms. Functional medicine practitioners spend time with their patients, listening to their histories and looking at the interactions among genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors that can influence long-term health and complex, chronic disease. In this way, functional medicine supports the unique expression of health and vitality for each individual.

how is functional medicine different?

Functional medicine involves understanding the origins, prevention, and treatment of complex, chronic disease. Hallmarks of a functional medicine approach include:

Patient-centered care. The focus of functional medicine is on patient-centered care, promoting health as a positive vitality, beyond just the absence of disease. By listening to the patient and learning his or her story, the practitioner brings the patient into the discovery process and tailors treatments that address the individual’s unique needs.

An integrative, science-based healthcare approach. Functional medicine practitioners look “upstream” to consider the complex web of interactions in the patient’s history, physiology, and lifestyle that can lead to illness. The unique genetic makeup of each patient is considered, along with both internal (mind, body, and spirit) and external (physical and social environment) factors that affect total functioning.

Integrating best medical practices. Functional medicine integrates traditional Western medical practices with what is sometimes considered “alternative” or “integrative” medicine, creating a focus on prevention through nutrition, diet, and exercise; use of the latest laboratory testing and other diagnostic techniques; and prescribed combinations of drugs and/or botanical medicines, supplements, therapeutic diets, detoxification programs, or stress-management techniques..

Sheila Jackson

I turned to alternative healthcare nine years ago after being diagnosed with a hepatic portal vein thrombosis – a blood clot in the portal vein of my liver. After spending days in the hospital, months receiving coumadin injections in my stomach, and a battery of tests that came back “inconclusive,” my most disheartening moment was when the internal medicine specialist said, “This condition is so rare. It just doesn’t ever happen to people.”

Suddenly, I was seeing one medical specialist after another. All were reporting the same thing – there was nothing that they could find that would explain how this had happened inside my body. Once it was confirmed that I did not have a blood clotting disorder, conventional medicine’s response was this, “Understand that this life-threatening condition has happened once, and it could happen again.”

Feeling overwhelmed and lacking clarity on what caused my body to respond this way, I couldn’t accept the explanation that there wasn’t anything more I could do.

We all agreed; my body was malfunctioning. I learned that it would be up to me to get to the root of the problem.

I left knowing that I was going to have to take a more assertive role in my own health if my real aim was to age well, prevent disease, and feel good in my own body.

Since then, I have dedicated myself, hundreds of hours, and thousands in resources to the ongoing study of nutrition, botanical therapies, holistic healthcare, and drug-free mind-body medicine.

I completed my first study of Nutrition at Cornell University, became a Functional Medicine Health Coach (FMCHC), Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P), and a Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach (NBC-HWC). The changes I made alleviated the stress on my liver, and the function was restored.

It wasn’t until I witnessed up close the rapid decline of the human body as a business partner lost his life to stage four pancreatic cancer, and my “healthy” younger husband was facing his own cancer diagnosis that my desire to align my passion and profession was propelled to the forefront of what it is today.

My mission revealed itself – facilitate a process that equips people to navigate their own healing journey effectively, bring life back into balance, and reclaim the vitality we are inherently designed to achieve.
